DOSSIER - Embedded telematics: what's new for 2021
Telematics: the impact of the health crisis
For telematics specialists, the health crisis linked to Covid-19 has had various impacts, both on the offer of services and on customers.
“Unaffected by the health crisis, Optimum Automotive has continued to innovate,” says Daniel Vassalucci, its president.

In particular, we have deployed new interconnections with a significant number of rental companies, repair and maintenance companies, oil tankers, car distributors, insurers, etc.”
Despite the health crisis, Masternaut, for its part, saw its position strengthen: “Our customers need efficiency and cost reduction more than ever”, notes Gilson Santiago, its president.
Teams organized by teleworking
At Ocean, from the first lockdown, the teams organized themselves remotely to ensure the continuity of services to customers. The vehicles and applications were equipped very quickly after this first installation and has since been done in accordance with health safety regulations.
“Since the start of the pandemic, no suspension of activity has been necessary,” says Barbara Tron, the marketing director. All the teams continued to provide training, provide advice, install installations, develop functionalities, etc.”
A necessary control of the use of vehicles
According to Coyote and in medium-sized businesses, the health crisis has caused an awareness of the need to control the use of vehicles when telematics was not previously considered.
For their part, large companies have questioned the cost of their solutions in the face of the real uses made of them. Another impact of the crisis, some companies had to isolate their vehicles and machines and worried about their vulnerability to theft. Coyote Secure, the group's post-theft solution, has thus enjoyed increased interest with the signing of important contracts in the end.
Measuring the impact of Covid-19 on transport
Finally, in 2020, Geotab partnered with Web §eet Solutions to analyze data from more than 3 million connected vehicles in North America and Europe to measure the impact of Covid-19 on transport. In this period of crisis, Geotab highlights the importance of data feedback. “This data can be used to inform decision-makers at the highest level”, points out Geotab. For example, with information from telematics, it is possible to know the rates of use of vehicles and then to analyze the activity of the various departments of the company. Geotab has also provided its customers with a free dashboard on the resumption of commercial mobility to help them better understand the evolution of economic activity since the beginning of the crisis.
